CBD - Too Good to be True?
An exploration into why CBD is helping millions of people worldwide to improve their health and wellbeing
Author: Elaine Godley
Before I experienced stage IV cancer in 2015, I had already undergone surgery and treatment for two types of breast cancer. I read everything I could, attended courses in person and online, studied to become a nutritionist, delved deeper into my passion and expertise using the DISC model on how behaviours affect our lives and gained a diploma in psychology. My aim was to be prepared and have every conceivable tool and strategy at my disposal should the dreaded C return. I've recently undertaken additional training as a Biohacker to further understand how we can change our physiology.
Of course, I now realise as I am writing this blog, how daft I was because what we think about is what we manifest. In making my preparations, I was actually fuelling my fear of cancer returning. Sounds ridiculous to some, but true. In another blog I will explain how the power of our mind affects us at every twist and turn.
Throughout my research, cannabis oil kept on appearing as a feasible solution to beat cancer. I learned about the Rick Simpson protocol. Rick is a Canadian who stumbled on medicinal mariujana as a way to support the body to heal. He maintained that being on 1 gram per day for 90 days would banish cancer and put the person into remission. Well, what he is reputed to say is it would 'cure' cancer. However, no-one is allowed to say that unless they are medically qualified to do so and so Rick got himself into hot water and even had to move to a different country to evade prosecution, so the story goes. The outdated 1939 Cancer Act outlaws such advertising claims.
I am often asked to trial products and give my opinion, and CBD has cropped up several times recently and so I looked into it further. To my amazement, one of the introductions led me to an organic farm in the UK, driving distance from where I live and so I arranged a visit.
I am pictured with Sarah St Clair who is the driving force behind the brand.
CBD is derived from the Hemp plant. There are several ways to grow, harvest and extract the oil, and many variations of strain and strength. The UK company I initially chose to support and recommended, uses the same testing laboratory as King's College Hospital in London where every batch undergoes rigorous checks. However, their extraction method has changed and I so am now supporting Sarah who is collaborating with an organic grower in Italy who uses a kinder method of production. I don't know the ins and outs - suffice to say that if the boss says it's good, believe me, it's good!
What Conditions does CBD Support?
Well, how long have you got? CBD has helped millions of people worldwide to minimise symptoms of many, many conditions, including chronic pain, cancer, fibromyalgia, ME, Parkinson's, autism, arthritis, epilepsy, rheutmatism, PTSD. Consumers report better sleep, lower anxiety levels, even more confidence and overall improvements to their health and wellbeing. Take a look for yourself through an internet search. Several articles and video links are supplied in the reference section to get you started.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is extracted from the flowers and leaves of the Cannabis Sativa L. (Industrial hemp) plant. The Hemp plant enjoys a combination of incredibly strong and versatile fibre, delicious and nutritious seed products and CBD.
EU certified strains of hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.) can be grown outside in large quantities as the plant has no psychoactive properties nor recreational value. Modern strains of black market cannabis can be considered quite separate from these plant varieties. CBD is one of over 100 cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant family which is non-psychoactive, and has been demonstrated as being biologically active.
Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol(THC) is another such cannabinoid, this is the psychoactive component of cannabis which is illegal.
Endocannabinoid System
Every person is constantly producing cannabinoids within their own body, they are essential.
They are one of the basic mechanisms our cells use to communicate with one another and is thought to be a major factor in the body’s ability to achieve homeostasis; (a natural and healthy balance of inter dependent bodily systems).
Essential dietary fatty acids such as Omega-3 have been shown to be used by the body as building blocks to make the bodies own cannabinoids, and the importance of these for overall health and wellbeing are well established. Significant amounts of cannabinoids are also found in human breast milk.
Phytocannabinoids (cannabinoids of plant origin) interact with this system in individual ways depending on the nature of the individual phytocannabinoid.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is thought to act on the endocannabinoid system (endogenous cannabinoids are those naturally present in the body) indirectly, by modulating the breakdown of the body’s own cannabinoids, supporting the potential of the natural signalling system and therefore the body's ability to maintain good health.
